GLOBAL CLIMATE CHANGEGlobal Warming - Climate Changes - Greenhouse Effect |
Global climate change is now a scientific fact as a result of increased concentrations of greenhouse gases such as carbon dioxide, methane, nitrous oxides and chlorofluorocarbons. These gases are trapping more terrestrial infrared radiation and it is expected that planetry temperature will increase between 1.5 and 4.5°C (the so-called Greenhouse Effect and Global Warming). In response to this, it is estimated that the global rainfall patterns and ocean currents will also be altered. Although there is general agreement on these findings, there is great uncertainty about the magnitudes and rates of these changes on regional scales. Linked to these climate changes, major alterations in global ecosystems will occur. Scientific studies suggest that the ranges of tree species may vary significantly as a result of these global climate changes. For example, studies in Canada project losses of about 170 million hectares of forests in southern Canada and profits of 70 million hectares in northern Canada, for changes as those that are suggested and would entail a net loss of 100 million hectares of forests. And these are just some of the global changes ahead... Read more>> |
